Tiered ARF: Most cars sold incur higher taxes

MORE than 85 per cent of car models sold in Singapore today will attract higher taxes with the newly introduced tiered Additional Registration Fee (ARF) scheme.

This could lead to some consumers favouring Japanese and Korean brands again, since these cars will become even more affordable in relation to the German brands.

According to data collated by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), only 27 - or 13.7 per cent - of a total of 197 car models will not see their ARF rising.

In the tiered scheme, a car with an Open Market Value (OMV or approximate cost price) of up to $20,000 will be taxed at the current rate of 100 per cent. The next $30,000 will be taxed at 140 per cent, and any OMV above $50,000 at 180 per cent.

The tiered scheme is effective for cars registered with COEs obtained from next month.

The LTA data shows about half - or 101 - of the models attracting the next-tier tax of 140 per cent, and 69 models subjected to the 180 per cent tax.

The list is based on cars registered last month. The car with the highest OMV registered last month - $422,791 - was a Lamborghini Aventador.

Car dealers note that the current model mix might change now that costlier cars incur higher - and often punitive - taxes.

Motor Traders Association vice-president Glenn Tan said the current model mix, with a large proportion of premium European brands, is a function of high COE prices.
The COE premium for cars up to 1,600cc is now hovering around $78,000 while that for bigger cars is around $92,000.

"If things change, we will see a flight back to more reasonably priced cars," he added.
This could mean the Japanese and Korean brands, which were traditionally top sellers before the German models started gaining ground four to five years ago.

The best-selling Japanese and Korean cars typically have OMVs below $20,000.
Will sellers attempt to suppress OMVs, say, by fitting components such as air-conditioners, hi-fi systems and sports rims locally?

Mr Michael Wong, general manager of Isuzu agent Triangle Auto, said: "That may happen but it boils down to the savings. But by doing that, you also incur labour cost."

The impact of the tiered ARF scheme is expected to be moderate for most cars. For instance, a Toyota Camry 2.0 with an OMV of $23,519 will incur $24,927 in ARF, or $1,408 more.

The popular BMW 520i, with an OMV of $41,316, will attract $49,842 in ARF, or $8,526 more.
But at the top end, the tiered system is punitive. A Rolls-Royce Phantom with an OMV of $632,000 will incur $1,088,000 in ARF - $456,000 more.

Mr Wong said: "The bulk of cars here will be within a so-called 'palatable' range. Bear in mind that ARF was 175 per cent not too long ago." The period he was referring to was 1983 to 1990 when all cars were subjected to a flat 175 per cent ARF.

In that regime, the Phantom, BMW 520i and Camry would have incurred $1,106,000, $72,303 and $41,158 in ARF respectively. Back then, luxury-car buyers complained that car taxes were unfair to them.

UK students disrupt Israeli official's lecture on campus

LONDON, Feb 28: Dozens of students disrupted last week a speech by Israel’s Deputy Ambassador to Britain Alon Roth-Snir at the Essex University, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Thursday.

A lecture scheduled to be given by Daniel Taub, the Ambassador to Britain, was also cancelled at the University of North Ireland, due to fear of disturbances.

Roth-Snir’s speech was scheduled at the invitation of the University of Essex’s Middle East club. But before the deputy ambassador had begun speaking, dozens of Pro-Palestinian students besieged the hall in which the lecture was to take place. They were eventually pushed out by security personnel.

Yet as Roth-Snir began to speak, some 30 students began to call out against Israel, labeling it a “criminal apartheid state,” and preventing the Israeli official from getting a word in.

The students ignored requests of staff and other students that they allow the speech to continue.

Due to requests to continue the speech, the university moved Roth-Snir and some of the students to another hall, but dozens of protestors besieged the hall, banged in anger on the doors and windows and threatened to break in. University authorities who feared chaos, decided to end the lecture

At the same time, Ambassador Taub was visiting in Northern Ireland, where he was set to speak to students at one of the province's universities. The institution’s administration, fearing student disturbances, changed the lecture format.

Instead of speaking before the large student audience that had been scheduled, the ambassador spoke in front of an audience of some 10 lecturers.

The two events join a long list of anti-Israel activity which has been occurring on British campuses, and reflect a consolidation of the movement to de-legitimize Israel in the UK.

In yet another incident, students from University of Oxford attempted to join the boycott against Israel.

And last week, British Parliament member George Galloway walked out of a discussion on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict at Oxford, after learning that one of the participants was an Israeli student. "I don't debate with Israelis," Galloway said, got up hurriedly, got his coat, and stormed out.

Upon leaving he reiterated: "I don't recognize Israel and I don’t debate with Israelis."

Rafizi: BN's 'new' car price policy caters to rich

Feb 28: There is nothing to shout about the announcement today by Ministry of International Trade and Industry to slash duties on cars from Japan and Australia, according to PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli.

“It is not something new and it's part of the policy which is widely known,” he said.

Rafizi said there was already a policy to abolish import duties on completely built-up luxury cars, and no import tax on vehicles from Japan in the 2,500 to 3,000cc range.

But Rafizi said the policy was tailored to benefit the rich.

“Import duty is abolished for those big, imported and expensive vehicles which only the wealthy can afford,” he said.

On the announcement by International Trade and Industry minister Mustapa Mohamad, Rafizi said the ‘new’ policy would only impact 21,000 vehicles annually because CBU vehicles from Japan only make up 3.5 percent of the total industry volume.

While the impact on Australian-made cars is negligible, he added.

In contrast, Rafizi said PR’s automative policy which forms part of its manifesto is meant to reduce excise duties gradually over the course of five years at 20 percent annually.

He said at present, vehicles 1,800 cc and below are slapped with excise duty as high as 85 percent, and 115 percent for vehicles above 3,000 cc, without considering production cost.

“These are the taxes killing the people especially the lower group who buy locally produced vehicles,” Rafizi said.

Mustapa meanwhile denied that the policy which would see zero duties on cars made in Japan and Australia after three years was a reaction to PR’s manifesto.

“It was just a coincidence ... It had nothing to do with (the manifesto),” he claimed.

Pro-UMNO comedian calls it quits after YouTube sketch invited anger

Feb 28: Comedian Salih Yaacob, who drew condemnations from netizens following his politically-charged YouTube series to mock Pakatan Rakyat, has announced his retirement.

The 52-year old was quoted by UMNO's Utusan Malaysia as saying that he was disappointed by the criticisms hurled against him, following the three-minute clip in which he and fellow entertainer Nabil Ahmad mocked PR's manifesto.

"I'm disappointed and I apologise to my fans," said Salih (pic), who also co-hosts a morning radio talk show on Astro-owned Malay-language Sinar FM radio channel.

Saying he would no longer be involved in the show business, Salih added it was now up to Sinar FM to decide on his future.

The radio station's Facebook has been flooded with messages calling for it to axe Salih for being partisan. Many have also called for a boycott of the station.

In the video, part of a series called "Bangkang Dari Longkang" (Oppose From The Gutters), Salih and Nabil stood against a backdrop of banners bearing the same colours of PR's three component parties PAS, DAP and PKR, poking fun at the coalition's manifesto and electoral promises.

At press time, the video has received close to 190,000 views, generating more than 7,000 'dislikes' against some 900 'likes'.

Manifesto: PAS giat beri kefahaman kepada rakyat

Anis Nazri
28 Feb 2013

Manifesto Rakyat: Mahathir guna jawapan fotostat

Abdul Aziz Mustafa
28 Feb 2013

Ringkasan Kes Altantuya 2008 - 2013 (Bala Kembali)

Malaysia will never compromise with the Sulu armed group holed up at Kampung Tanduo in Felda Sahabat 17 for over 12 days, assured Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

“We want to ensure the operations are carried out smoothly. We do not want any problem, bloodshed or loss of lives from any party,” said Hishammuddin, before he flew to Lahad Datu today for a ground assessment of the situation.

He said although the group was armed, they were neither militants or terrorists.
“It is our duty to ensure there won't be bloodshed. I want to let the people know what is really going on. This is so that I can give a better answer and clearer picture of things happening there,” he said.

Urging Malaysians to ignore rumours surrounding the intentions of the Sulu armed group, Hishammuddin said: “What's most important is the safety aspect and that this has nothing to do with sovereignty or other speculation.”

Describing such rumours as “baseless”, he said there were “some things that should not be politicised” and warned that action would be taken should these prove to jeopardise public safety.

“We are trying to calm the people, lower the temperature and allay any public fear or concern,” said Hishammuddin, urging Malaysians to show their support and encouragement to the security forces for their work since the group first landed at the remote seaside village in Felda Sahabat 17 on Feb 9.

The group, numbering some 100 people and reportedly headed by Raja Muda Azzimudie Kiram, the brother of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, had demanded to meet certain “personalities” as negotiations dragged on.

They were believed to be wielding M16, M14 and Baby Armalite assault weapons and M203 grenade launchers although Sultan Jamalul claimed that they had arrived in Sabah's east coast unarmed and would be staying put because Sabah was their “homeland”.
The group, including five women, had earlier demanded recognition as the Royal Sultanate of Sulu Army, calling for the Suluk community, which had been in Sabah for a long time, not to be deported.

Since Feb 9, they had been living off the produce of 15 farming families who fled Kampung Tanduo.

Malaysia, said Hishammuddin, was also working closely with the Philippine Government to resolve the stand-off, adding that he could not say, as yet, when deportation of the group would start.

“We have always been tightening the level of our defence but our sea borders and coastline are so long,” he said.

Not worth responding to BN over PM choice, says Anwar

Pakatan Rakyat’s prime ministerial candidate is never a concern, according to parliamentary opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

“I don’t see not announcing the prime ministerial candidate as a problem to people,” he told a press conference today.

Anwar said that it was more important to focus on PR's manifesto launched yesterday, which centres on empowerment of the people and increasing monthly income during its first term in the Federal seat.

On BN’s allegation that PR could not agree on a choice of prime minister,  Anwar said it was not worth responding.

“Will BN announce their PM candidate when it presents the manifesto? During the 2008 election, was Khalid (Ibrahim) announced as the candidate for Selangor Menteri Besar?” asked the PKR de facto leader.

BN-controlled media have claimed that PAS has not agreed to Anwar as the prime minister’s candidate.

PAS information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man meanwhile dismissed rumours that Gua Musang member of parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah had been named as a PM candidate.

PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu said the PM-to-be will be made public at the right time.

Feb 27: A group of university students today greeted the prime minister's wife on a visit to their campus with placards mocking her much-talked about controversies.

Some 50 students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's Islamic Study Circle (ISIUKM) gathered outside the Tun Abdul Razak hall where Rosmah Mansor was the guest of honour for a programme involving students.

Rosmah's presence at the programme had generated protests from students who cited her alleged penchant for extravagance and involvement in wrongdoings.

This afternoon, about half an hour before the programme ended at 4.30 pm, students gathered and held placards mocking her, including one which read "We want Rosmah to be the PM". Another poked fun at her interest in a RM24 million diamond ring.

Several security guards' attempt to stop the protest failed amid the students' resolve to stay put.

However, Rosmah avoided the students and was quickly ushered into another vehicle. She had earlier arrived in a Mercedes Benz.

“We just wanted to express the people's feeling at Datin Seri Rosmah, but it is clear she was afraid of facing us," said Hamiza Hani Omar, who is also deputy secretary of Islamic students federation GAMIS.

This was the second protest against Rosmah on a university campus. In 2009, five University of Malaya students were charged for arson and vandalism.

They were alleged to have poured petrol on the red carpet on the eve of wife Rosmah's visit to the campus, and also for vandalising a lecture hall with the graffiti 'pembunuh Altantuya' (Altantuya's murderer) and 'bini puaka' (evil wife). All of them were acquitted of the charges in September 2010.

Penceroboh Lahad Datu sedia pertahankan diri

Anwar Ibrahim: Mengapa Saya Bersungguh-sungguh Mahu Merebut Putarajaya?

Dato Seri Mohd Najib - Menteri Pertahanan Malaysia / Timbalan Perdana Menteri Malaysia.

Abdul Razak Baginda - Penganalisis Pertahanan kepada Kementerian Pertahanan Malaysia / pemilik 'Perimekar'.

Ketua Inspektor Hazilah Hadri - (UTK) yang berkhidmat sebagai 'body guard' di pejabat Dato Seri Mohd Najib.

Koperal Sirul Azhar Umar - (UTK) juga berkhidmat sebagai 'body guard' di pejabat Dato Seri Mohd Najib.

Aziz Buyong - Kolonel Tentera / Pakar bom C4.

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi - Perdana Menteri Malaysia / Menerima Kertas Siasatan dari Penyiasat Polis Tentera Malaysia (MP).

Khairy Jamaludin - Menantu Perdana Menteri Malaysia / Menyimpan Kertas Siasatan berkenaan bagi tujuan survival politiknya setelah ketiadaan Pak Lah nanti.

Rosmah Mansor - Isteri Dato Seri Mohd Najib / Berada di tempat mayat diletupkan dengan C4.

Norhayati - Isteri Kolonel Aziz Buyong / Pembantu Khas Rosmah yang turut berada di tempat kejadian letupan bom C4.

Fakta-Fakta lain dalam kes Pembunuhan Kejam Altantuya:
Bom C4 milik Angkatan Tentera Malaysia.

Important link to the case: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Shaariibuugiin_Altantuyaa

Bangkitlah wahai rakyat Malaysia!!!

SA Senator Nick Xenophon in custody in Malaysia over meetings with pro-democracy MPs

AUSTRALIAN politicians have called off a visit to Malaysia after Independent Senator Nick Xenophon was refused entry and detained pending deportation.

The group, comprising Senator Xenophon, Liberal MP Mal Washer, Nationals Senator John Williams and ALP MP Steve Georganas, were planning an unofficial visit to Kuala Lumpur ahead of Malaysia's upcoming elections.

They were to meet opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, as well as Malaysia's minister in charge of parliamentary affairs Mohammed Nazri and members of the group Bersih, the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections.

Senator Xenophon, who arrived ahead of the others, proceeded no further than the immigration line. He is being held in an interrogation room at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which has a series of adjoining cells holding female prisoners.

He has been told he is not allowed to make telephone calls and is not even allowed to go to the bathroom without a police guard. Senator Xenophon managed to make a call to The Sunday Mail when he was left unattended in the interrogation room.

"I am effectively a prisoner here," Senator Xenophon said. "I'm being held in an area with all these holding cells which are full of women. They have basically told me I am an enemy of the state. They are trying to get me on the next plane out of here and back home."

Senator Xenophon managed to use his contacts to get a text message to the Australian High Commission in KL and is awaiting a visit from High Commissioner Miles Cooper.
After he landed this morning the South Australian anti-pokies Senator joined the customs queue but was told there were "irregularities" with his passport.

He was then taken away by the immigration officials to the guarded area where he was told that the Malaysian authorities knew of his stance on human rights in Malaysia and his itinerary for this week.

Senator Xenophon was scheduled to meet with pro-democracy and Opposition MPs - yet oddly he had also been granted a meeting with a senior Government MP, the Special Minister of State.
"I was even meeting members of the Government, I mean, the whole situation is ridiculous, we are meant to be the closest of friends with Malaysia," he said.

"We are meant to be having a people swap deal on asylum seekers but so far it looks like the only person being swapped is me."

Senator Xenophon believes that a recent article he wrote for Fairfax newspapers in January, which was critical of human rights in Malaysia, may have emboldened the authorities to deny him entry.
Last year he was also unwittingly caught up in a 25,000-strong democracy protest in KL where he was tear-gassed.

Senator Williams said the delegation, planned two months ago, would not now proceed.
"I have just spoken to Mal Washer and told him that I'd be pulling out. I have spoken to (deputy opposition leader) Julie Bishop and I sent Nick Xenophon a text message saying we'd be pulling out of the trip and he just replied OK," he told ABC television.

Senator Williams said he thought it better now to let the dust settle and visit later in the year.
He said Senator Xenophon had visited Malaysia on other occasions and wanted a bipartisan Australian delegation to conduct a low profile visit, meeting MPs and members of the election commission.

"Nick Xenophon asked me and I have a lot of respect for Nick. We are pretty good mates. When he has a problem, you'd expect that the problem would be genuine," he said.
"Nick said there's some problem over there. He'd like us to go over and visit."
Senator Williams said he did not believe a a protest by Australia would help.

"I don't think pouring petrol on a fire would help anything. Obviously we need to build some relationships there as far as Senator Xenophon goes, but I don't think it's a big issue," he said.
"They have their reasons why they stopped him at the airport and I'm sure in time these can be talked through."

"It will settle down in a few weeks time and we'll look at whether we can make a visit then."

Associate Professor Clinton Fernandes of the International and Political Studies Program at the University of NSW said the Malaysian Government was worried about Senator Xenophon because he "provides the public with an international voice about problems with the electoral system."
Senator Xenophon and Dr Fernandes were part of a 2012 International Fact-Finding Mission on Elections in Malaysia, whose report was critical of the Government and which called for electoral reform.

"Senator Xenophon and a delegation of Australian parliamentarians were going to Malaysia to meet with politicians, the Malaysian Bar Council and the Electoral Commission to discuss electoral reform outlined in that report," he said.

"There is no doubt the reason he is being deported is because the report was critical of the electoral system - for example it showed a leading government figure has an electorate with just 7000 voters while the Deputy Opposition Leader has an electorate with 100,000 constituents.
"There is a class of people who have never lost power since Malaysia was formed and they are now worried as the youthful population is calling for democratic changes and they don't know what to do about it.

"There has been no violence so the government can't call them terrorists and crack down on them, there have been no agent provocateurs to provide a trigger for an armed crackdown. Senator Xenophon's presence provides them with an international voice about problems with the electoral system, so they want him out."

Dr Fernandes said Senator Xenophon was not at risk of harm from Malaysian authorities but said they wanted him out of the country to avoid a focus for discontent, as elections must be held by June.

He noted Senator Xenophon has annoyed the Government by giving copies of the Fact Finding Mission on Election in Malaysia to every diplomatic mission base in Canberra to ensure the wider international community was aware of electoral issues in the nation.
The fact finding mission was conducted by international observer group with representatives from India, Pakistan, Germany, Indonesia, the Philippines as well as Senator Xenophon and Dr Fernandes.

Senator Xenophon visited the nation in April last year when he was teargassed by riot police breaking up a mass peaceful demonstration in Kuala Lumpur demanding democratic reforms.

Students threatened again while campaigning in Pekan, Pahang.

Feb 15: Students who descended on prime minister Najib Razak's constituency of Pekan have been targeted again by attackers linked to UMNO, forcing them to cut short their campaign against Barisan Nasional.
RESTLESS IN PEKAN ... The crowd at the scene where students are being surrounded by UMNO-led mob
Yesterday, a mob surrounded several students who were distributing leaflets house-to-house.

The students, part of the group called Undergraduates Movement for GE-13 (GM13), were surrounded at Madrasah Darul Husna, PAS's headquarters in Pekan.

PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan, who is also Pahang PAS deputy commissioner, said PAS Youth members immediately went to the scene when told of the commotion.

Nasrudin however advised the students to remain steadfast in their struggle.

“Before this, it was ANAK (National Felda Settlers’ Children Association) and now the students. What has become of country’s politics?” he asked.

Students group Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) secretary Ahmad Shukri Kamaruddin meanwhile said that the UMNO workers had arrived in 10 cars and several motorcycles at the PAS centre. However, they retreated after villagers came to the students' help.

Later at night, Pahang PAS commissioner Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man informed Harakahdaily that the party chartered a bus to bring the students back to Kuala Lumpur.

“We chartered a bus for RM1600 to ferry the students back to Kuala Lumpur. Police provided security until it reached Gambang,” he added.

The incident followed two other attacks on the students by UMNO workers in Pulau Manis and Felda Chini respectively.

GM-13 recently declared an awareness campaign among the Pekan electorate ahead of the coming polls.

A day after a student was assaulted by several men believed to be UMNO workers, four student activists who took their anti-BN campaign to the parliamentary constituency of prime minister Najib Razak were attacked with with machete by unknown individuals.

The incident took place at Felda Chini at 4.00 am today.

The students, who were going house to house to distribute anti-BN flyers at the Felda neighbourhood, claimed they were confronted by several youths on motorcycles, one of whom carried a machete.

News site Malaysiakini quoted Universiti of Malaya student Safwan Shamsudin as saying that the assailants were locals there, who yelled at them.

“When we saw the machete, we said that we would leave," Safwan said, adding that their flyers were seized.

Safwan said the students, two of whom were female, decided to leave fearing their safety.

A report had been lodged at Chini police station.

Yesterday, Ekshan Bukhari from Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel) and his two friends were attacked several UMNO supporters while distributing anti-UMNO flyers.

A group of students activists calling themselves Undergraduates Movement for GE-13 have recently declared to organise an awareness campaign among the Pekan electorate.

UPAH GANGNAM STYLE By BN

UPAH GANGNAM STYLE: Highlights of the day!
Like and share this before Utusan or NST spread their lies!

1. The delayed PSY Performance.
RIDING on the wave of attention just before PSY shows up, Teng Chang Yeow, Najib and Rosmah consecutively put up their monkey shows to 'entertain' the audience. PSY's performance was delayed from 1130 to 1215.

2. Najib's son's speech.
This speech had only one purpose: To use Najib's son's Chinese-speaking skills to engage the audience. However, this failed miserably when all the audience could hear was: 古人常说,"一日之计在于晨,一年之计在于春"and "一分耕耘,一分收获", which by the way, had nothing to do with what he had to say.

3. Najib's attempts to engage the audience.
When Najib shouted "Satu!", many of the local UMNO youth shouted, "Malaysia!" But when Najib shouted "一个!" Nobody answered him. He repeated it thrice. And the silence repeated itself thrice.

4. Rosmah's performance
The audience, now impatient to see PSY, BOOed when Rosmah surfaced on stage to sing CNY songs. But singing was too laborious a task for our plump, pampered first lady, who could only lip-sync to the background music.

5. The FAILED impromptu attempt to trick PSY to 捞生
Teng Chang Yeow, Najib, Rosmah, Abdullah Badawi were ready with their chopsticks. But PSY, who had arrived since 6am, refused to appear on stage to 捞生with the BN leaders to preserve his neutrality. After a few minutes, all the BN leaders were ousted off the stage to make way for the Glorious Gangnam.

6. "Are you ready for BN?" "NO!"
"Are you ready for PSY?" asked the Emcee.
"Yes!" cheered the people.

"Are you ready for BN?" asked the Emcee, slipping in a trick question.
"NO!" thundered the people who were not fooled.

* CORRECTION: The 'EMCEE' is Najib himself, we have verified this fact from footage and personal accounts of attendees. Which makes it....even funnier!

7. Leaving before Najib
No group photos, no handshakes. As soon as PSY shouted, "Thank you very much!", and while Najib was still trembling in his seat, people left theirs, leaving behind piles of uneaten food. The Emcee was as quiet as a clam, knowing that it would be impossible to call the crowd back.

CONCLUSION:
Psy came for the money. The people came for the free food and performances. Who cares about BN and its bid for power?

*copied from unknown source but good info.

Are You Ready For BN???!!

Najib: Pakatan envies BN for getting Psy first

NONE
Pakatan Rakyat, especially DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, is jealous of BN for scoring with Korean “Gangnam Style” star Psy, claimed Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

“Actually, he wants to invite Psy (right) to a function under the Pakatan Rakyat name, but when Psy chose to attend our event, that derailed his plans.

“That is the real story,” the premier told reporters at a press conference after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting in Kuala Lumpur today.

“He may have his reasons, but I am baffled with his reaction. Every year we do the same (event),” continued the PM, decrying Pakatan’s alleged politicising of the issue, which included the tearing down of Chinese New Years posters bearing a picture of him wearing a ‘fashionable’ Chinese tunic.

Najib had expressed his sadness over the fact that Pakatan is allegedly making much ado about what is supposed to be just an event to celebrate the Chinese New Year for Malaysians of Chinese descent.

He added that if DAP had their “Ubah Rocket Style” video, then it should be okay if BN has the real thing.

When asked if he is going to accept the invitation from the major Chinese education pressure group, Dong Zong, to their Chinese New Year celebration, the PM appears guarded.
“I am still considering it,” he answered.

This is the first time in 50 years that the Chinese education crusaders have extended an invite to a Malaysian prime minister – the latter who are usually at the end of their urgent proddings about more favours for Chinese schools.

umno disciplinary committee 170309 tengku ahmad rithauddeen tengku ismailAt the press conference, Najib also announced that Umno will tighten its hold over its divisions by forming a disciplinary watchdog committee to stave off any incidental sabotage during the upcoming polls.

He said that Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen Ismail (right) has been chosen to lead the seven-men body, with its other members yet to be decided.

The Malay party will also have enforcer-like posts in all divisions, where a representative of the central disciplinary body will be on the committee of each division to keep a closer eye on things.

The system smacks of the political commissars deployed by the communist party in Russia and China, where a central party representative is embedded in all military units and departments to ensure that they toe the party line.

Malaysiakini journalists were barred from entering the Umno building to attend the press conference today. However, an audio recording of the press conference was afterwards made available to the Malaysiakini reporters by other members of the press.

PSY SLAP IN THE FACE: Korean superstar refused to toss 'yee-sang' with Najib, BN

 11 Feb 2013
 Wong Choon Mei, Alaa Soleiman,

PSY SLAP IN THE FACE: Korean superstar refused to toss 'yee-sang' with Najib, BNKorean superstar Psy handed Malaysia's ruling party a slap in the face when he declined to come onstage to toss the traditional 'yee-sang' with Prime Minister Najib Razak and other top members of his BN coalition on Monday.

In Penang to sing his signature Oppa Gangnam-style, Psy lived up to his fame and his purported RM2mil fee. He had the crowd singing and shouting along to with him and his troupe of really sharp and good-looking dancers.

For four minutes, the tens of thousands of Penangites who came to watch him at the Han Chiang school field simply went crazy. They demanded an encore and he gave them what they wanted. More Gangnam!

But sadly for the BN, Psy wisely swerved away from being used to promote Najib's 1Malaysia brand of politics. The Malaysian leader had moments earlier announced to the crowd that Psy had a surprise for them - Oppa BN style.

However, it was not to be. Najib, wife Rosmah Mansor, son Norashman, former premier Abdullah Badawi, Gerakan chiefs Koh Tsu Koon, Teng Chang Yeow and Tourism minister Ng Yen Yen were among those left red-faced on stage after Psy's aide told them he would not join them for the 'yee-sang' tossing ceremony.
Yee-sang is a raw fish salad tossed by Malaysian Chinese during the Chinese Lunar Year to signify good luck and success. The BN's 5-year mandate to rule will end on April 28, 2013 and Najib is widely expected to call for the 13th general election within weeks.

However, the signs so far are that BN may well lose its 55-year stranglehold on the federal government, with the Pakatan Rakyat led by Anwar Ibrahim rated as having an even chance of pulling off the country's first-ever regime change.

To survive an ouster from within his own Umno party, Najib needs a convincing victory and to ensure this, he needs to claw back the lost support of voters, in particular the Malaysian Chinese community, who have been disgusted and frustrated by the endemic corruption and scandals of the BN elite.
In the countdown to psy's much-awaited performance, many ordinary Malaysians had pleaded with Psy on his Facebook to turn down the BN's invite as they viewed as a 'election gimmick' to get Psy to 'recommend' voting for the BN.

"Psy's response shows he is on the ground with the Malaysian people. They want to come to his concert but do not want to be used by Najib and Gerakan to show support for BN. Who to vote for is a serious matter not a public relations circus for Chang Yeow to show off his organizing skills or to butter up to the Najibs," Tan Kee Kwong, a former senior Gerakan leader who is now part of Anwar's key team, told Malaysia Chronicle.

"I am glad Psy was smart and fair. There is no reason for him to support the BN, it is not known for decent politics or for reform. They tried to use him, so why should he support such insincere politicians."
Indeed, Gerakan leaders as well as Najib's advisers had tried their best to use the occassion to shore up Najib's dwindling pouplarity. At 63%, Najib has the lowest approval rating of all prime ministers so far going into a general election.

Just a day ago, Najib had told the press he wanted to do something new this year. Indeed, his strategy of wearing a crimson red Chinese jersey in CNY banners hung across the nation raised eyebrows among the conservative faction in his umno party. The fact that Najib was photographed alone and brought along his son Norashman on his CNY functions also did not pass un-noticed.
