Feb 15: Students who descended on prime minister Najib Razak's constituency of Pekan have been targeted again by attackers linked to UMNO, forcing them to cut short their campaign against Barisan Nasional.
RESTLESS IN PEKAN ... The crowd at the scene where students are being surrounded by UMNO-led mob
Yesterday, a mob surrounded several students who were distributing leaflets house-to-house.

The students, part of the group called Undergraduates Movement for GE-13 (GM13), were surrounded at Madrasah Darul Husna, PAS's headquarters in Pekan.

PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan, who is also Pahang PAS deputy commissioner, said PAS Youth members immediately went to the scene when told of the commotion.

Nasrudin however advised the students to remain steadfast in their struggle.

“Before this, it was ANAK (National Felda Settlers’ Children Association) and now the students. What has become of country’s politics?” he asked.

Students group Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) secretary Ahmad Shukri Kamaruddin meanwhile said that the UMNO workers had arrived in 10 cars and several motorcycles at the PAS centre. However, they retreated after villagers came to the students' help.

Later at night, Pahang PAS commissioner Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man informed Harakahdaily that the party chartered a bus to bring the students back to Kuala Lumpur.

“We chartered a bus for RM1600 to ferry the students back to Kuala Lumpur. Police provided security until it reached Gambang,” he added.

The incident followed two other attacks on the students by UMNO workers in Pulau Manis and Felda Chini respectively.

GM-13 recently declared an awareness campaign among the Pekan electorate ahead of the coming polls.

A day after a student was assaulted by several men believed to be UMNO workers, four student activists who took their anti-BN campaign to the parliamentary constituency of prime minister Najib Razak were attacked with with machete by unknown individuals.

The incident took place at Felda Chini at 4.00 am today.

The students, who were going house to house to distribute anti-BN flyers at the Felda neighbourhood, claimed they were confronted by several youths on motorcycles, one of whom carried a machete.

News site Malaysiakini quoted Universiti of Malaya student Safwan Shamsudin as saying that the assailants were locals there, who yelled at them.

“When we saw the machete, we said that we would leave," Safwan said, adding that their flyers were seized.

Safwan said the students, two of whom were female, decided to leave fearing their safety.

A report had been lodged at Chini police station.

Yesterday, Ekshan Bukhari from Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel) and his two friends were attacked several UMNO supporters while distributing anti-UMNO flyers.

A group of students activists calling themselves Undergraduates Movement for GE-13 have recently declared to organise an awareness campaign among the Pekan electorate.
