A letter circulating through mobile messages and Facebook showed
deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin's approval of Hari Raya
assistance to all voters in Kuala Besut.
The letter, signed by Hj Salleh bin Abdul Latif, the BN secretary for Kuala Besut by-election, states that the first payment of RM300 would be distributed on July 22.
Senior citizens would receive RM800, followed by village heads who would get RM700, and youth and women RM600 each.
“(This) must be offered to all registered voters in Kuala Besut whether our members or members of the opposition,” it states.
PAS research centre director Dzulkefly Ahmad meanwhile revised BN’s expenditure for the Kuala Besut by-election, saying the cost had ballooned to RM476.19 million.
With a total of 17,683 voters, Dzulkefly said BN was spending an average of RM27,000 each voter, a record high in the country’s history.
“To ensure all the sweeteners promised by UMNO leaders will be implemented, PAS and Pakatan Rakyat are really hoping that voters of Kuala Besut will help us realise the 16:16 agenda,” said Dzulkefly.
Yesterday, influential electoral reforms coalition Bersih 2.0 condemned the use of public funds by the BN state and Federal governments.
A win by PAS in Kuala Besut would result in equal distribution of seats between Pakatan Rakyat and BN in the Terengganu state assembly.
