Leaders condole fallen warriors

Mar 1: Pakatan Rakyat leaders have expressed condolence over the death of two Malaysian commandos, among the 14 killed today as security forces moved in to end the stand-off between authorities and an armed group of men who occupied Kampung Tanduo, Lahad Datu since February 9.

In the operation, Inspector Zulkifli Mamat and Corporal Sabarudin Daud from VAT69, specialised in countering terrorism, were killed in the operation, while three others were wounded.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said the Najib Razak administration must explain to the people over the invasion attempt.

“How our borders could be so easily infiltrated by armed enemies and why the government had been too lenient in solving the issue?” he asked.

Beaufort member of parliament Lajim Ukin said he hoped peace would return soon to Lahad Datu, and dismissed rumours that the incident was politically motivated.

PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan reminded that the country’s security and sovereignty should not be undermined.

“The government's stern action is very much needed to prevent intruders from threatening the lives of the people and in the process undermine the country's dignity and sovereignty,” he said.

He also announced a fund to assist families of the fallen policemen.

Lahad Datu meanwhile has been under curfew since 4.00 pm. Sabah police chief Hamza Taib said that it was the armed group who first opened fire on the Malaysian security forces.

Najib meanwhile said he had authorised Malaysian security forces to take any action against the 180 followers of the Sulu Sultanate who had been demanding payment from the government.

"Do not test our patience, our patience has reached the limit," he was quoted as saying by Bernama. "We have a plan to remove them, they should have surrendered and left."
