Key to our future is not with Mahathir
It’s been nine years since former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad “retired” from the political arena. His “retirement” came after 22 years of steering the wheel as the prime minister of Malaysia, thus making him one of the longest world leaders holding the position as a prime minister.
As prime minister, he is responsible for introducing the F1 formula race to Malaysian shores, the construction of the Petronas Twin Towers, the construction of Putrajaya and Cyberjaya as well as a long list of other mega projects.
As a still influential and widely respected statesman, he had the opportunity to live this retirement in peace and is no longer involved in the world of dirty politics. Yet, in this run-up to the 13th general election (GE13), he chose otherwise.
At one end, we see Mahathir as a respected statesman, reminding the public on the importance of remembering Malaysian history, yet the readers of his blog as well as his media statements might think otherwise.
Remembering history is vital, but remembering history through one myopic scope and not a panoramic view is not an idea to be encouraged.
Lately, Mahathir can be seen digging up the old ghosts of racial sentiments. He ominously warns the Malays that Lim Kit Siang’s win in Gelang Patah will bring bad news to Malays and at the same time, he is seen criticising and condemning the Malays as forgetful and lazy.
He endorses the screening of the controversial film “Tanda Putera” to Malaysians. According to him, “if a race controls certain interests and the other does not, it will spell out anger and this is not good for the country”.
Also not forgetting is his harsh criticism of the opposition which, according to Mahathir, has the tendency to politicise racial-based and religious issues.
Yet, before he shoots the opposition for raising racial sentiments and politicising religious issues, it was he himself who endorsed the call by Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) president, Ibrahim Ali, to burn Bibles containing the word “Allah” in those Bibles.
Adding insult to injury, Mahathir also noted that the burning of illegal books is a normal procedure.
His indefatigable support of the controversial Ibrahim does not end there. He is also seen supporting Ibrahim to contest a seat in this coming GE13.
According to Mahathir, the purpose of Ibrahim establishing Perkasa was not to promote himself, but to campaign on behalf of Barisan Nasional. Hence, Ibrahim is a man that deserved to be given a position.
The relationship between Mahathir and Perkasa is a symbiotic one. Mahathir gives his support to Perkasa and Perkasa gives Mahathir the opportunity to speak at its general meeting.
Mahathir reportedly warns of the possibility of the tragedy of May 13, 1969 recurring if it is forgotten by Malaysians. Yet it is he himself who is fanning the sparks of racism by stating that DAP’s Kit Siang is content if the Chinese hate the Malays.
In the same news report, Mahathir also noted that DAP is always undertaking measures to create a hostile environment between the Malays and the Chinese.
He asserts that peace and progressive development in Malaysia will never materialise if we were to squabble among ourselves. And yet, at the same time, it is he himself who encourages discrimination and prejudice between those two races.
What does he want?
This is the total opposite of what Mahathir said two years ago when he advised MCA to refrain itself from entertaining extremist groups if MCA wanted Umno to do the same with Perkasa, which was categorised as racist by MCA.
Yet Mahathir himself continues his support for extremist parties such as his backing for Perkasa.
In his relentless efforts to fan racial sentiments, Mahathir asserts that since DAP is carrying on the Malaysian Malaysia agenda (based on Singapore’s People’s Action Party), DAP is also fighting for the same concept of meritocracy which decreases the opportunities for the Malays in the field of economy and education.
According to him, meritocracy is not about a partnership; it is instead all about the winner taking all.
Mahathir paints a picture of PKR and PAS as political parties that manipulate and use the Malays while DAP is painted as a party that only wants to defeat the Malays as if the Malays are their enemy.
Yet, when one reads his blog writing as well as reads his media statements or his opinions in the media, readers are able to picture him as not as a proponent of unity between races in Malaysia.
The question is, what does Mahathir want to achieve?
He wants development for Malaysia. He wants Malaysia to be a developed nation as that is why he implemented the mega projects such as the Petronas Twin Towers, Putrajaya as well as Cyberjaya.
He wants the Malaysian name to be recognised on the world stage. Yet at the same time, he flames the fire of racial sentiments, pitting the Chinese and Malays against each other.
He describes the Chinese as a race that is is prejudicial towards the Malays and asserts that the Malays needs to protect themselves against the Chinese. And in his mind, this protection comes in the form of Malays supporting BN, Umno as well as Perkasa as only those three political parties can protect the interests of the Malays.
Let’s not forget that he himself describes the Malays as ungrateful and lazy bunch.
This igniting of racial sentiments has placed the Malaysian name on the world stage along with Mahathir’s mega projects and other achievements, however, it does not paint a rosy picture of Malaysia as planned by Mahathir.
Instead, it paints Malaysia as a country centered on racism and race politics. The Malaysian identity as a moderate Islamic state is sullied by the messy relationship Malaysia has with racism.
Is this the legacy planned to be left behind by Mahathir? A broken and a disunited country? Because that is where Malaysia is heading if race politics is played in repeat by Mahathir.
His special right
He want the Malays to be united and prosperous yet he himself has shown the tendency to belittle, criticise and humiliate any efforts demonstrated by the Malays.
He wants unity but he continuously supports the efforts of a political party that is associated with racist acts.
In a nutshell, Mahathir’s real intention is to stay relevant in the eyes of Malaysians as well as his beloved political arena.
He does not want to be forgotten by Malaysians nor his political colleagues. He has held the position of a prime minister for 22 years. It cannot be an easy task for him to let go of all that power and influence to someone else.
Power and influence are both very addictive. Having the power to decide the direction of those who depend on you is an addictive drug. So is having the power to steer the direction of a nation and having the freedom to defend you own private political interest.
Letting off of something that you have hold on for so long is never an easy thing to do.
Mahathir’s addiction on power and influence lead him to this path. He reminisces his days in the office of the prime minister. He is not a senile old man. He is a statesman and former prime minister that still has influences particularly within the political parties of Umno and BN.
As per the words of George Orwell “ all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”. In his mind, that is what he thinks of himself. He opines that he deserves more than others for his ‘service’ to this country.
He realised that the only way for him to attract attention from his political buddies is to dig and unearth racial politics whilst placing the strategically placed blame on the opposition parties.
Since he is a political animal, it is not surprising for a seasoned politician who have spent so long of his life in the political world that he would anything to crawl back into the political world post retirement.
What else could be the reason for Mahathir to dig up racial sentiments if it were not for his addiction for the political world? The old thorn of race should not be dug up to come back and haunt Malaysians who want a different stroke for Malaysia based on transparency, honesty and meritocracy.
It is this meritocratic nature that scares Mahathir because he believes the Malays do not have the drive or capabilities to improve themselves. He believes he is the only qualified driver of the Malay fate.
Those notions are however far from true. The Malays do have the drive as much as the want to steer their own futures. The Malays have the ability to rise up to the challenge without any political meddling or the words of a politician. So is the Chinese. The Chinese do not hate the Malays and vice versa.
Mahathir may be a former prime minister, a politician and a statesman, but those does not give him special rights over others. He does not hold the key of Malaysia’s future.
It is the Malaysians themselves who hold the key for their own future. If he realises this, then he would not have taken this path. Because in the end, is the collective opinion of Malaysians that matter and not the opinions of one politician.

Mereka turut beramai-ramai melaungkan ungkapan "wu yue wu, huan zheng fu (5 Mei, Kita tukar kerajaan)" berulang-ulang kali sewaktu menanti Anwar tiba ke tapak ceramah.
Lebih menarik lagi, hampir kesemua golongan “first time voter” merupakan kumpulan anak muda termasuklah mahasiswa.

EC told to explain delible 'indelible ink'
Apr
30: Hours after advance voting started this morning, the social media
were flooded with images of the removable 'indelible ink' marked on
voters' fingers.
The discovery by voters led to a barrage of questions being heaped on the Election Commission, which had been dismissing public concerns over irregularities of the electoral system.
The EC had claimed that the ink would last for about a week.
■ DELIBLE ... A voter shows how the ink can be removed using a wet cloth
PAS lawyer Asmuni Awi said the party received many complaints from army and police officers that the indelible ink can be washed away from one's index finger using just water and soap.
“We have received many complaints that the indelible ink used today is not permanent and could be washed. Is this true? If so, PAS wants explanation from EC because it had given its assurance that the indelible ink could last at least three days,” Asmuni told a press conference held in Ipoh.
He expressed concerns that the development would lead to double voting on polling day this Sunday.
Despite voters showing how the indelible ink could easily come off, EC chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof insisted that there was no such thing.
“Impossible, I do not believe the indelible ink can be removed by any oil-based lubricant... the ink is made from silver nitrate. When the ink is put on the fingernail, it will seep into the skin,” he was quoted as saying by The Malaysian Insider.
Aziz urged complainants to come forward to prove their claims. On police’s report lodged by several Pakatan Rakyat leaders on the incident, Aziz said he would leave it to the police.
Political analyst Dr Mohammad Agus Yusoff meanwhile questioned Aziz’s sincerity in resolving the matter.
“The people are voting on May 5. Can the police and EC detail their investigation results before then?” he asked.

Dakwat kekal... tidak kekal
Koh Jun Lin
30 Apr 2013
Beliau inginkan indentitinya dirahsiakan.

Ex-IGP now a Pakatan advisor on security
PETALING JAYA: Former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan has joined Pakatan Rakyat’s security advisory council in the wake of violence ahead of the May 5 general election.
He told reporters today that he was invited into the panel by ex-army chief Hashim Hussein, who is the PKR candidate for the Johor Bahru parliament seat.
“We wish to categorically state that political violence has no place in our democratic process,” the two said in a joint statement.
“We are alarmed that the minister of home affairs minister publicly announced that these incidents would worsen.”
The council will assist Pakatan in ensuring a peaceful transition of power should the opposition pact win the coming election.
It will also advise Pakatan on matters of national security.
Musa said he would advise the council on how to engage with the police.
He called on the police to be fair in their investigations into reported cases of violence during the current political campaigning and advised members of the public not to succumb to provocation.
“If a provocation happens, do not take the law into your own hands,” he said, adding that the best way to deal with the situation would be to gather evidence that could be useful to the police.
Musa said he had no political affiliation and would have advised Barisan Nasional if it had sought his opinion on security matters.
The Pakatan security advisory council was set up last month.
'Spring cleaning' in Putrajaya among rumours as PR eyes victory
Apr
29: Rumours have been circulating that a 'cleaning up drive' is
underway in the top echelons of power, following a growing belief that
Pakatan Rakyat will be forming the Federal government after this
weekend's polls.
It has been reported earlier that the National Council of Professors Malaysia (MPN), which assumes an advisory role on Federal government policies, will convene an extraordinary meeting in Putrajaya to discuss the latest developments.
For several days now, analysts and pollsters have been reporting a growing trend of voters preparing to ditch Barisan Nasional. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in Putrajaya itself, where 'underdog' PAS candidate Husam Musa's programmes have been attracting mammoth crowds, forcing UMNO to bring its strongman Dr Mahathir Mohamad into direct campaigning. Days before nomination day, BN's Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor had boasted that Husam would lose by two-thirds majority.
And a survey released by University of Malaya's Centre for Democracy and Elections pointing towards a PR victory has roused the ire of BN leaders including its chairman Najib Razak.
Seasoned political analyst Ahmad Lutfi Othman, who is also chief editor of PAS organ Harakah, has recently a source from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, on the extraordinary meeting by MPN.
Lutfi said the meeting was being called in the wake of "worries that a BN fall from power is imminent", he wrote in the BM edition of the Harakahdaily news portal.
"Apparently there were many such meetings taking place in Putrajaya to discuss the subject," he added.
Cleaning up?
Meantime, a text message is making rounds claiming that the Prime Minister's Office is undergoing a 'spring cleaning' exercise in anticipation of a PR victory.
Harakahdaily has not been able to verify the claim, but judging from recent experience, such rumours cannot be easily dismissed as hearsay.
Similar 'spring cleaning' by outgoing BN state governments had been reported in 2008 hours before election results confirming PR's victory in Selangor, Perak, Penang and Kedah, where it was claimed that documents on shady land deals had been destroyed before the new PR government was sworn-in.

Faizal Tahir, Yassin muncul dengan video klip ‘Berani’
Rusnizam Mahat
29 April 2013
Mengalir bagaikan ia kepastian, takkan terhalang.
Bidas kenyataan Norman

Malaysian Chinese May Drop Najib as Fear of Riot Repeat Ebbs
Daniel Ten Kate
26 April 2013
Malaysian businessman Stanley Thai says he’s joining thousands of fellow ethnic Chinese citizens in abandoning support for Prime Minister Najib Razak and voting for the opposition for the first time in elections next month.
“Why are the Chinese against the government -- it’s simple,” Thai, 53, owner of medical glove-maker Supermax Corp. (SUCB), said in an interview last month. “We don’t want our children to suffer what we suffered, deprived from education, from career opportunities, from business opportunities.”
Chinese, who make up about a quarter of Malaysia’s population, are growing intolerant of affirmative-action programs for Malays propagated by Najib’s alliance of parties, the most recent national poll indicates. Any mass defection by Chinese voters raises the risk of the ruling coalition’s first election loss since it was formed after 1969 race riots.
The violence of 1969 helped persuade many Chinese to back Barisan Nasional, which Najib has led since 2009, as they accepted racial preferences for Malays as the cost of peace. Thai said thinking changed when the government’s electoral take sank in 2008 with little sign of renewed social unrest. “Everyone said, ‘Wow, the time has come,’” he said.
Now, the opposition, led by Anwar Ibrahim, sees the end of race-based policies that have hindered companies such as Supermax as key to long-term economic growth. Najib counters that his gradual reform of the affirmative-action programs will assure stability and avert a slide in stocks and the ringgit that would accompany any opposition victory.
The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index (FTSEMIB), which has lagged other Southeast Asian benchmarks this year, gained 0.3 percent today to close at a record high. The ringgit advanced for a third day, the longest rally in three weeks, on speculation further monetary easing in Japan and Europe will boost demand for emerging-market assets.
In 2008, the ruling 13-party Barisan Nasional coalition won by its slimmest margin since it was formed, with three Chinese parties losing half their parliamentary seats. Anwar’s own multi-racial coalition, which includes a Chinese-majority party and a mostly Malay party that advocates Shariah law in criminal matters, has pledged to eliminate race-based policies to fight corruption.
“What we’re seeing with the implementation of the policy is enormous rent-seeking and patronage and corruption,” said Edmund Terence Gomez, a professor at University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur who edited a book on the affirmative-action program. “The electoral trends clearly indicate that Malaysians are saying they’ve had enough of race-based politics.”
The New Economic Policy sought to raise the share of national wealth to at least 30 percent for Malays and indigenous groups known as Bumiputera, or “sons of the soil,” that make up about 60 percent of the population. They got cheaper housing and quotas for college places, government contracts and shares of listed companies.
While Najib has tweaked the policy for publicly traded firms and extended benefits to poorer members of all races, many other elements remain intact. Malaysia favors Bumiputera companies in awarding contracts from the government and state- owned enterprises, the U.S. Trade Representative wrote in a March report.
“We don’t play the racial card -- we play a moderate Malaysia, an inclusive Malaysia and we’re talking about power sharing,” Najib said in an April 17 interview. “That’s the kind of storyboard that we are trying to convince the Malaysian Chinese.”
Supermax, the nation’s third-largest medical glove-maker, now exports 24 billion gloves a year, said Thai, whose holdings in the company are worth about $93 million. For years he and other Chinese entrepreneurs were wary of publicly speaking out about corruption in the 42-year-old affirmative action program due to concerns of reprisals.
Mahathir Mohamad, who ruled from 1981 to 2003 and was Malaysia’s longest-serving leader, alluded to those fears in a blog post this month urging Chinese voters in Johor to back the government. An opposition win would undermine the racial balance the Barisan Nasional aimed to achieve, he wrote.
“An unhealthy racial confrontation would replace Sino- Malay cooperation which has made Malaysia stable and prosperous,” Mahathir wrote.
Najib said in last week’s interview that his pursuit of gradual change would avoid the upheaval that engulfed the Middle East after longstanding governments collapsed. An opposition win could trigger “catastrophic ruin” that would cause stocks and the currency to plunge, he warned.
“The Chinese feel that the government has not done enough for them, but the same can be said of
the Indians and the Malays,” said Wilfred Yap, an official with the Chinese- majority Sarawak United People’s Party, which is part of Najib’s coalition. “They are still complaining that the Chinese still control a big chunk of the economy,” he said, referring to the Malay and Indian populations.
Meantime, Anwar’s alliance is emulating Barisan Nasional’s original formula by promoting policies that seek to unite races and religions, according to Liew Chin Tong, a lawmaker with the Chinese-majority Democratic Action Party, one of three in the opposition coalition.
“They are suffering now because they are now only focusing on the Malay votes,” Liew said in an interview last month, referring to the government. “With Mahathir playing the racist card, they are speaking to only the Malay audience in the hope to push the Malay vote up to 65 percent.”

Najib counters that his gradual reform of the affirmative-action programs will assure stability and avert a slide in stocks and the ringgit that would accompany any opposition victory.
Vision Contest
“It’s a contest ultimately about visions -- do you believe the country is Malay-centered or a state of all its citizens?” said Clive Kessler, emeritus professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, who has studied Malaysian politics for half a century. “Najib no longer has adequate non-Malay support,” said Kessler, who estimates the ruling coalition must win about two-thirds of Malay votes to stay in power.
Anwar’s Group
About half of Malaysia’s 29 million people are Malays, while roughly a quarter have Chinese roots and the rest are mostly ethnic Indians or indigenous groups. One in five ethnic Chinese think the country is headed in the right direction, compared with 75 percent of Malays, according to a February survey by the Merdeka Center for Opinion Research, the most recent available.

Malay Preferences
In 1969, Malaysia suspended parliament for more than a year after race riots in the wake of a close election killed hundreds of people. Abdul Razak, Najib’s father, then initiated the racial preferences in 1971 as the country’s second prime minister.

“We don’t play the racial card -- we play a moderate Malaysia, an inclusive Malaysia and we’re talking about power sharing,” Najib said in an April 17 interview. “That’s the kind of storyboard that we are trying to convince the Malaysian Chinese.”
College Rejection
Thai, whose father fled China in 1949 during the Communist takeover, is dubious. After growing up on a farm with 13 siblings in Johor, which borders Singapore, he failed to gain entry to a university where Malays received priority and moved to Canada to get a college degree. On his return, he built a business aimed at exporting rubber gloves to avoid restrictions on selling within Malaysia.Supermax, the nation’s third-largest medical glove-maker, now exports 24 billion gloves a year, said Thai, whose holdings in the company are worth about $93 million. For years he and other Chinese entrepreneurs were wary of publicly speaking out about corruption in the 42-year-old affirmative action program due to concerns of reprisals.
Fear Factor
“We have been brainwashed from Day 1,” Thai said. “We were born and bred with fear and threats by our own government.”Mahathir Mohamad, who ruled from 1981 to 2003 and was Malaysia’s longest-serving leader, alluded to those fears in a blog post this month urging Chinese voters in Johor to back the government.
‘Still Complaining’
Chinese parties in Barisan Nasional are urging voters to stick with the government to promote social justice and warning that the Malay parties in the opposition will seek to impose Islamic laws. Malays and other indigenous groups owned 22 percent of share capital at limited companies in 2008, compared with 35 percent for Chinese, according to the most recent government statistics.“The Chinese feel that the government has not done enough for them, but the same can be said of
the Indians and the Malays,” said Wilfred Yap, an official with the Chinese- majority Sarawak United People’s Party, which is part of Najib’s coalition. “They are still complaining that the Chinese still control a big chunk of the economy,” he said, referring to the Malay and Indian populations.

Mat Taib: Umno telah gagal, jadi perlukan PERKASA
Lu Wei Hoong
27 Apr 2013

China to buy 60 Airbus planes from France
Hollande is expected to have three meetings with Xi, including a state banque
A significant portion of the planes will be manufactured in China at an Airbus factory in Tianjin, 150km from the capital, an industry source told the AFP news agency on condition on anonymity.
The signing ceremony on Thursday took place in the Great Hall of the People during the first day of Hollande's two-day visit to the country aimed at boosting trade.
While exchanging greetings with Xi, Hollande, who arrived earlier with a number of French business people, said: "Today there is a trade imbalance and it behooves us to fix it, not to reduce our investments and our exports but to increase them.
"This is what we will discuss during our meetings."
Xi told Hollande: "You are working actively to promote growth and increase competitiveness.
"I look forward to the future of our global strategic partnership and look forward to working with you to make our bilateral relationship closer, healthier and more vibrant."
Hollande is the first head of state from a major Western nation to meet with Xi since he became China's head of state last month.
Boosting trade
France accounts for just 1.3 percent of China's foreign trade compared with around five percent for Germany, and a trade deficit with China of $34bn last year is seen in Paris as unsustainable.
But reversing this will not be easy for a country that lacks Germany's strength in the production of capital goods or export-driven business culture.
Aides to Hollande believe the Chinese yuan is seriously undervalued and expect the issue to be raised during his two-day visit, albeit without much hope of significant progress.
In industrial terms, France's highest value cards are its share in Airbus and its nuclear expertise.
Hopes are high that French nuclear giant Areva and the Chinese energy group CNNC will sign letters of intent on the construction of a nuclear waste treatment facility.
Carmaker Renault hopes to progress negotiations on a proposed factory at Wuhan that would produce 150,000 vehicles per year.
France is also pushing for greater access to the Chinese market for its charcuterie, or cooked pork meat, producers.
Hollande is expected to have three meetings with Xi, including a state banquet on Thursday and a more intimate lunch on Friday along with their respective partners, Valerie Trierweiler and Peng Liyuan.
For Hollande, beset by economic woes and the aftermath of a corruption scandal that forced his budget minister to resign, the trip is a break from domestic troubles.

‘Tipu pilihanraya, kita turun jalanraya’
Kampung Medan belum didengar.
“Jangan tipu pilihan raya…jangan tipu pilihan raya… jangan tipu pilihan raya…

BN gelabah, indikator jelas Putrajaya dah goyang
KUALA LUMPUR:

Latest UM survey shows Anwar, PR ahead of Najib, BN
Apr 25: With only ten days to polling day, a new survey by University of Malaya Centre for Democracy and Elections has revealed that opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is the favourite for the post of prime minister, ahead of UMNO president Najib Razak.
The survey interviewed some 1,407 respondents in Peninsular Malaysia between the day parliament was dissolved (April 3) and nomination day on April 20.
UMCEDEL director Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman announced that Anwar garnered 43 per cent approval compared to Najib's 39 per cent, while the rest of the respondents were still undecided.
"Anwar's popularity increased after he launched his nationwide tour," said Redzuan.
Long before parliament's dissolution, Anwar had started his nationwide roadshow using his 'Jelajah Merdeka Rakyat' tour bus, which had since come under attack from mobs of UMNO supporters at several stops.
The survey, apart from showing that Anwar is currently the choice of first time voters, also revealed that 54 per cent Malay respondents support Anwar for the prime minister's post as opposed to 34 percent support for Najib.
The findings further showed that Pakatan Rakyat's manifesto enjoys slightly more support (42%) than BN's (38%), though a seizable number of those interviewed (22%) are still undecided.
One interesting finding by the survey is that only 11 per cent agreed that recent proliferation of pornographic materials accusing political opponents of illicit sex could sway their decision.
Redzuan added that the survey also found that most Chinese voters have by now made up their mind, although an earlier one showed them in the majority of fence-sitters.
However, Redzuan said nothing was final in the days leading to polling day.
"In the context of general election in Malaysia, anything can happen. In 10 days, anything can happen," he warned.

Jamilah Kamarudin
25 April 2013
Ketika kejadian, Pengerusi Gerakan Pulau Pinang Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan sedang menyampaikan ceramah.
